Quality cookware is a key ingredient of any kitchen. Without cookware you are pretty much out of luck, unless you like eating your food raw or ordering take-out every day. With the new styles and designs of today, you can find cookware to match any kitchen décor. Before purchasing any cookware, it might be helpful to take some time and figure out just what your needs and goals are.
For instance--do you like to entertain? Have a large family? Or is it just one or two people you cook for? The answers to these questions will determine whether you need a complete set of cookware or just a few individual items.
Bear in mind that you can save a lot of money by purchasing complete sets of cookware--rather
than buying one item at a time.
Cookware is made of several different materials, each with its own special qualities. Pots and pans made of copper have great heat distribution, but are expensive and require much care.
Aluminum cookware is very inexpensive, but doesn’t last long and is “reactive,” meaning that it is prone to rust and may impart a metallic flavor into the food.Cast iron is good for high temperature cooking--it can go from stove top to oven--but is reactive like copper and should be seasoned first.
Stainless steel cookware could be the best all-around: fairly inexpensive, decent heat conductor, and holds up well to wear and tear.Non-stick cookware makes clean-up a breeze--just use a sponge instead of steel wool or a scouring pad--and it reduces the need for high-fat cooking oils and butter. There are also some new, high-tech materials such as titanium and magnalite that may be worth looking into.
You should probably start out with the basics in cookware.Every kitchen will probably need pots and pans of various sizes, a large skillet, a Dutch oven or stockpot, and some baking/roasting pans.
If you like baking you’ll probably need some cake and loaf pans and a cookie sheet as you get more ambitious and skillful, you can add more exotic cookware. Remember that you get what you pay for.It may be better in the long run to spend a little more for high quality cookware that lasts a lifetime.
